So today was a bit cloudy and chilly so we decided we should take advantage of that and go up to the volcano! So we hopped in the car and drove the 2.5 hour drive up to the top of the volcano.
Lily got a bit car sick so we had to make our first unplanned stop but it was perfect because we got to pick some papayas off a tree while waiting for Lily’s tummy to settle. YAY FOR FRESH PICKED PAPAYAS!
Back in the car…but you can’t drive very far in Kona, Hawaii without stopping at a coffee farm! So we had a wee stop, some coffee and macadamia nuts. Brilliant stop over!
So we continued on…it was about lunch time so we stopped over at Black Sands
Beach on the South Coast. Black sands is where there are loads and loads of sea turtles. We saw 4! One of them was hauled up onto the beach getting his tan on 😉
Up to the volcano we went! It was pretty cold once we got to the top. Not cold enough to regret wearing shorts though! 😉 We had a little hike up to the rim of the volcano and around the steam vents. It was a bit creepy seeing “earth cracks” and realizing that if you fell down one you would eventually land in hot lava!!! Such crazy times 😉 We hiked through Thurston Lava Tube which is a massive lava tube! Another wee hike then back in the car. Lots of walking today, we’re tired!!!
